Have you already checked into whether you really need to strip the varnish before painting the trim? I'm seeing some diversity of opinion in online sources...

It's your house. Ripping out the trim would be sacrilege. Painting it is reversible and gives some future owner something to do.

can you unblock the door to the hall, and block the door to the girls' room (obviously only if they have a door into the hall as well...)? It seems you might never get the privacy you crave with the connecting door between the rooms (unless there is also a skeleton key for that one!)

Can you do a floor plan and post it--I bet there's a bunch of us who would love to help you with it.

Here's some unsolicited advice: if you absolutely must put the bed in front of a window, mount curtain panels so that the whole thing is as wide as the bed. That's a lot of curtain and curtain pole, but it will give you a headboard "effect" and make a feature out of the misfortune. They don't have to "work"--that is, draw all the way across if you use a shade on the window itself. That means less fabric (and expense). I can draw you a picture if you need it.

I do plan to rearrange furniture so that door to hallway is used and door to girls' room is blocked (and locked) Right now, our computer desk sits on the other side of door in our hallway that functions as an office. I need to figure out where to relocate the family office....might move it to the dining room (like you Alana) Although we eat at our table everyday it is also used as homework central....or should the computer go to the basement...maybe I'd do more laundry if I had computer down there to keep me busy between loads.

Floor plan forthcoming!
